Everyone deserves to feel safe, respected and valued in their community. Hate crime can have a devastating impact on victims, their families and wider communities, which is why West Midlands Police is committed to tackling it and supporting those affected.
What Is a Hate Crime? A hate crime is any criminal offence that is motivated by hostility, prejudice or hatred towards a person because of a protected characteristic, or because the offender believes they have a protected characteristic.
These characteristics include: Race or ethnicity Religion or belief Disability Sexual orientation Transgender identity Hate crime can take many forms, including: Physical assault Criminal damage to property Threatening behaviour Verbal abuse Harassment or intimidation Offensive graffiti Online abuse and hate messages A person does not have to belong to a particular group to be targeted. If the offender believes they do, the incident may still be treated as a hate crime.
How Do I Know If It Is a Hate Crime? If you believe an incident happened because of hostility or prejudice towards one of the protected characteristics, it should be reported.
Ask yourself: Were offensive comments made about race, religion, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity? Was the incident targeted at a specific group or individual because of who they are? Did the behaviour make you feel threatened, intimidated or unsafe because of your identity? Even if you are unsure whether an incident meets the legal definition of a hate crime, it is still important to report it. West Midlands Police will assess the circumstances and provide advice and support where needed.
